CHI Student Design Competition

Competition Finalist | April 2023

Hamburg, Germany

Buddy: Helping School-age Children to Combat Bullying

Task: In April 2023, I traveled to Hamburg, Germany to present at the Computer-Human Interaction Student Design Conference with my fellow group members. We were 1 out of the 16 teams selected out of 56 entries to present, and were the only undergraduate students. We had the opportunity to present to the UX Director of Microsoft, Google, and had our work published in the Association for Computing Machinery.

My group aimed to find a solution to one of the 17 of the United Nation's sustainable goals - #4: Quality Education. After lots of user research, we developed an app called "Buddy" that would act as a way for parents and teachers to have a way to be aware of bullying or uncomfortable situations their child is experiencing at school. The student would carry a discrete keychain called the "Buddy Keychain" and could press it in a time of discomfort. The keychain would then pair with the Buddy app to notify the parent and teacher of these events.

This project was created throughout the semester of Fall 2022, but revisions were made in preparation for the competition and for it to be published in April of 2023.

The requirements for this project included a poster, video, and, research paper.
